VISIT TO MARIBOR, EUROPEAN CULTURAL CAPITAL 2012. INTRODUCTION AND VISIT TO THE CULTURAL-HISTORIC MONUMENTS OF PTUJ AND MARIBOR
In October 2012th year, experts of The Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments visited the Slovenian cities of Ptuj and Maribor. Our amiable colleagues from the Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia - Regional Office of Maribor, introduced us to their work and presented us with three important examples of executed conservation and restoration projects. The visit began with a tour of the reconstructed farm Ormožu, which now has a new purpose (museum and music school) accompanied by expert interpretation from the designer and architect conservator. This was followed by a tour of the rich and varied museum exhibitions in the medieval castle of Ptuj, and the night ended with a wine tasting in a cellar in Ptuj, also a successful example of the tourist attractions of the region. The second day of the visit to Slovenia began with a tour of the Minorite monastery building, which, after extensive restoration procedures, was converted into a puppet theater. The meeting and discussions at the regional office of the Institute for Protection of Monuments in Maribor ended with invitations to our colleagues from Slovenia to visit Novi Sad and Vojvodina. This was followed by a very comprehensive and informative sightseeing tour and talk about the organization of the event'' Maribor 2012 - European Capital of Culture''. The two-day visit was completed by a tour of the new, enlarged setting of the Regional Museum of Maribor and a farewell gathering with our hosts.
