WORKS OF THE PROVINCIAL INSTITUTE FOR THE PROTECTION OF CULTURAL MONUMENTS ON MOUNT ATHOS

After a disastrous fire in The Hilandar Monastery in 2004, The Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments began conservation and restoration activities on Mount Athos. Works on the iconostasis of the Hermitage of St. Sava the Sanctified in Kareja, were entrusted to the conservators of The Provincial Institute by the Ministry of Culture.
In the period from 2005 to 2013 a large team of conservators from The Provincial Institute - painters, sculptors, and carpenters-gilders - took on some very complicated tasks on more iconostasis, and for these works established a conservation and restoration workshop, firstly in the monastery guest house in Kareja, until 2008 when it was moved to the mill of the Hilandar monastery, where it remains today. The aim of the work is to dismantle damaged iconostasis and renovate them to their original condition, in order to re-introduce them to their liturgical functions. The following iconostasis have been reconstructed; iconostasis of the Hermitage of St. Sava the Sanctified in Kareja, the iconostasis in the Hilandar Monastery dormitory chapel in Kareja, the iconostasis of Metropolitan Simeon from 1635 from the Hilandar Monastery Cathedral. The project for the reconstruction of the iconostasis of the church of Holy Trinity and work on the implementation is planned to start in 2013. In parallel with the work on the restoration of the iconostasis, many icons from the monastery collection have been preserved and restored.
